At first glance Medicare insurance may seem a bit confusing and maybe even a bit intimidating. Whether you are new to Medicare or just weren’t quite aware of the different aspects of Medicare insurance in Nevada, we are here to help.

Let’s first take a look at the basic parts of Nevada Medicare:

  1. Part A (Hospital Insurance) – helps cover your inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health care if you meet certain conditions.
  2. Part B (Medical Insurance) – helps cover medically-necessary services like doctor’s services and outpatient care, other medical services that Part A doesn’t cover such as physical and occupational therapists, and some home health. Part B also helps cover some preventive services to help maintain your health and to keep certain illnesses from getting worse.
  3. Part C ( Medicare Advantage Plans) – private insurers like HMOs and PPOs provide Part A, Part B, and, sometimes, Part D coverage to people who enroll.
  4. Part D ( Medicare prescription drug coverage) – Remember this, D stands for Drugs – Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drug costs.

Most people on Medicare will choose either Nevada Medigap plan coupled with a Part D plan or choose a Medicare Advantage Plan (also known as Part C).

Now that we have clarified the Medicare alphabet let’s begin to take a look at Original Medicare and what it does for you.

Original Medicare

Medicare Card

Original Medicare refers to your health insurance. As there are many different aspects to your Medicare let’s first take a look at Part A and Part B of Original Medicare.

Am I eligible for Part A and Part B of Orginal Medicare?

One may become entitled to Medicare Part A because of his or her age (usually 65), disability, or End Stage Renal Disease. The Medicare Part A Entitlement is automatic if the individual has already applied to receive monthly retirement benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board. Otherwise, the individual must be file an application to receive Part A benefits.

In general you pay a monthly premium for your Part B insurance of Original Medicareof $99.90 in 2012. Based on your monthly income your premium may be higher or lower. For those that qualify for extra help your Part B insurance may be partially of fully subsidized.

To make it simple, Part A pays for your hospital and Part B pays for your Medical (Doctors).

Because Original Medicare leaves you with gaps in coverage we highly recommend a Nevada Medicare Supplement or Medicare Plan.

Nevada Medicare Supplements

What does a Nevada Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan do for me?

A Nevada Medicare supplement plan is plan that is generally designed to cover the gaps that Medicare does not cover such as co payments and co insurance.   This plan may be referred to as a Medigap plan.  The advantage of a Nevada Medicare supplement plan over a Nevada Medicare advantage plan is that there are no net works, no referrals, and generally no deductibles or co insurance to worry about. With a Medigap plan in Nevada you have the freedom to choose any doctor or any hospital you like as long as they accept Original Medicare.   Keep in mind when choosing a Medicare  supplement plan, all plans are standardized and offer the same coverage.  What will vary is the premium.  An example would be shopping for the same car and 3 different dealerships.  Most likely you will find that same car with three different prices.  My job is to shop different insurance carriers in Nevada to help you find the best rate for your Medicare Supplement plan.  Your premium may vary by the zip code you live in.  The lowest priced plan with one company in Reno, NV may be the highest priced plan in Las Vagas, NV.  To find out what is the best priced plan in your area and to start the process please call me at            1-800-779-0128      .

Every Medicare Supplement insurance policy in Nevada must follow Federal and state laws designed to protect you and the policy must be clearly identified as Medicare Supplement Insurance. Medigap insurance companies in Nevada and in most states can only sell you a standardized Medigap policy identified by letters A through N.  The most popular plan is Plan F.  Generally speaking this plan will cover the 20% that Medicare does not cover.  Plan F would be considered to be the Cadillac plan of Medicare supplements.  This may not always be the best option or most cost effective for you as other Medicare supplements may offer almost the same coverage at a reduced premium.  Typical plans that I recommend are Plan F, G or D.  Call             1-800-779-0128       to discuss which plan my be best for you.

Generally, when you buy a Medigap policy you must have Medicare Part A and Part B. You will have to pay the monthly Medicare Part B premium. In addition, you will have to pay a premium to the Medigap insurance company.

Making the right Medicare Choice

Making the right choice for you depends on a number of different factors. Some of the questions to ask yourself are:

1. What plans are available in my area?

2. Do I need an agent to help decide what plan is best for me?

3. Do I want a Medicare Supplement or a Medicare Advantage Plan?

4. Which PDP (Prescription Drug Plan) is best for me based on the medications I am currently taking?

5. Do I currently have a Nevada Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan that had a significant premium increase?

Although the ultimate decision comes down to what you want, it is our goal to educate you on the different Medicare Choices available to you. We WORK FOR YOU and not any one insurance company. We treat you right today so you don’t have to worry about tomorrow. Call 1-800-779-0128.
